A one time pager entrepreneur had a vision to win noncustomers to his wireless start-up by keeping it simple and smart. Pocket Communications was launched to offer wireless “where you want it, when you want it”.
Paul Posner believes that customers should have access to low cost, high quality wireless phone service that comes without fluctuating rates, hidden fees, contracts, or frustrating service agreements. He founded Pocket in 2006. Today, it is Texas’ fastest-growing flat rate wireless company, and the third largest flat rate carrier in the nation. Since the company was formed in May 2006, it has grown to over a quarter of a million customers. To keep costs low, Pocket had to own its licenses and network equipment. Posner outbid other competitors for cellular spectrum in a federal auction with his own money and launched Pocket.
Research showed that 80 to 85 percent of the people in South Texas didn’t care about roaming. Although Pocket's subscribers include credit-challenged customers, affordable fixed-rate plans also lure more mainstream consumers and small businesses interested in low rates and a predictable monthly bill. Most other prepaid providers charge customers per minute.Pocket also offers a prepaid funds account, also known as the Value Pocket, from which can be drawn such features as international calling, long distance, outgoing text messaging (incoming messages are free) and picture messages.
"Communication is a commodity business," Posner said. "People want it to work all the time, and they want it to be free. We try to come as close to both of those things as possible.”Pocket Wireless is a perfect example of a Blue Ocean Strategy because they both raised value and lowered operating costs.
